Boo!

A new study finds that Indianapolis is ranked the 8th worst city when it comes to celebrating Halloween.

Based on 16 factors, the website gave Indianapolis a score of just 38.25 out of 100.

At the very bottom of the WalletHub list were Detroit, Memphis and St. Petersburg, Fla. The best place to be for Halloween? New York City, followed by Jersey City, Newark, and Gilbert, Arizona.

Jill Gonzalez, analyst and spokeswoman for Wallet Hub, which ranks various financial products and services, said we were hit the hardest in the “Safety and Surroundings” category. Indianapolis is 90th in walkability, driven by our lack of sidewalks; 81st in violent and property crime; and 76th for population density, which matters when you are trekking house to house in search of that elusive full-size Snickers. It also doesn’t help that many of those homes are abandoned: Housing is only 86 percent occupied, compared with 99 and 100 percent in other cities, she said.

Weather was also one of the factors that contributed to Indy’s ranking. In 2013, we had the most rain on record, and this year rain in on the forecast again for Halloween.

So, what advice is there for trick-or-treating this year? Aside from hitting up the rich neighborhoods for full-size candy bars and lots of nice sidewalks, of course..

“If you’re going to be in a community that doesn’t have a lot of sidewalks and has a high population of vehicular traffic, then yes, I would suggest that you take your little ones to a church event or some other business-sponsored Halloween activity where they’re in a more secure area without vehicle traffic going back and forth,” advised IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams.

If you are out trick-or-treating with your little ghost or goblin, the hours for the city are from 6-8 pm. IMPD says it will have extra patrols on during that time. Kids can also stop into any IFD station for treats.
