SMH: Urban Outfitters Apologizes For Selling “Bloodied” Kent State Sweatshirt And Offending LOTS of People
Yesterday I received an E-mail from Urban Outfitters with the subject line “We’re Sorry” and I assumed it was spam…for some [oddly titled] sale or promotion. So I deleted it without even opening it. THEN, I ran across this online and now it all makes sense!
According to HollywoodLife.com, Urban Outfitters sold a $130 faux blood-stained Kent State sweatshirt online and people were outraged. Why? Well, here’s a little history refresher: there was a shooting in 1970 at Kent State, where 4 unarmed students died after being shot by the Ohio National guard during a protest of the Vietnam War.

So OBVIOUSLY, Urban Outfitters is apologizing BIGTIME, while taking to Twitter to claim that they never intended “to allude to the tragic events.”
The sweatshirt’s description on Urban Outfitter’s website read as follows:
“Washed soft and perfectly broken in, this vintage Kent State sweatshirt is cut in a loose, slouchy fit. Excellent vintage condition. We only have one, so get it or regret it!”

URBANOUTFITTERS.COM
shared this lengthy apology and explanation on Twitter:
“Urban Outfitters sincerely apologizes for any offense our Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt may have caused. It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such. The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. The red stains are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray. Again, we deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively and we have removed it immediately from our website to avoid further upset.”
