Alicia Keys’ Sued For Copyright Infringement
Songwriter Earl Shuman is suing Alicia Keys for copyright infringement over her hit song “Girl On Fire.” In a lawsuit that was filed in California last week, Shuman claims “Girl On Fire” sounds a little too familiar to the song “Hey There Lonely Girl,” which he co-wrote and was recorded by Eddie Holman. Shuman says there is a likeness to his song in “Girl On Fire” that several entertainment bloggers have picked up on. One of those bloggers was Roger Friedman at Showbiz411 who wrote in a November post that, “in the middle of the song, Alicia sings a couplet or so from Eddie Holman’s 1970 classic.”
In the post, he mistakenly wrote that both Shuman and co-writer Leon Carr were deceased. Shuman contacted the blogger to let me know he was still alive, and Friedman later wrote another post to correct his error. The complaint that was filed actually quotes Friedman’s original post, but does not address the particulars in “Girl On Fire” that are under speculation.
